The GeoJSON file format is written and maintained by an Internet working group of developers, unlike other GIS formats that are maintained by formal standards organizations.
Shapefiles (SHP) are commonly used in geographic information systems (GIS) software. It’s an industry standard, geospatial vector file developed by Esri. Shapefiles are a robust format only allowing for a single feature type (or geometry) per file. The supported geometries include Point, Polyline, Polygon, Multipoint and Multipath.
Keyhole Markup Language (KML) files are XML files developed for use with Google Earth and have become an international standard for many mapping applications. KMZ files are a compressed version of KML files. KMLs and KMZs are unique geospatial formats, allowing for points, lines and polygons all in the same file. Converting between GIS file formats often takes expensive, hard-to-use geospatial software like ArcGIS.
